Microneedling

Microneedling

What is Microneedling ?

Micro-needling therapy or collagen induction therapy is a minimally-invasive non-surgical and non-ablative procedure for facial rejuvenation that involves the use of a micro-needling device to create controlled skin injury.

The micro-wounds help to produce new collagen and elastin, which in turn improves skin texture, firmness and hydration.

Microneedling is a well-established treatment for skin repair, restructuring and rejuvenation.

    • Pigmentation.
    • Large pores.
    • Signs of ageing; lines and wrinkles.
    • Sun damaged skins.
    • Loss of volume.
    • Dull skin.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling ?

The benefits include:

    • Precise, safe and effective treatment for acne scarring, deep lines and overall skin rejuvenation.
    • Results are seen within a relatively short space of time.
    • Suitable for all skin types (even thin skin).
    • Minimal downtime.
    • More cost-effective than other ablative therapies.
    • Minimal discomfort with little or no side effects.

What does Treatment involve ?

There are a number of ways that this can be carried out using needling devices but they all work in basically the same way in that a micro-fine needle causes micro-trauma to the skin, which in turn induces collagen and elastin stimulation to help re-structure the skin.

I prefer to use a Dermafix pen, which is a small microneedling tool that is used for very precise treatment of skin problems as it has better depth . This device contains a number of tiny ‘micro needles’ which penetrate the skin’s outer layers.

This stimulates the skin’s own healing and rejuvenation processes and also allows serums or products to access deeper layers of the skin than would normally be achieved.

Is it safe ?

Yes, it’s very safe.

This is a non-invasive treatment which involves no injections, lasers or heat.

The Dermafix pen has sterile disposable cartridges and our clinic has very high standards of hygiene to minimise any risk of infection.

Is it painful ?

The treatment is very comfortable and clients should experience non to very minimal pain.

A topical anaesthetic can be applied for maximum comfort.

What results can I expect ?

You will notice a nice healthy glow and a plumpness to the skin immediately following treatment.

During the healing process the serums penetrate deeper into the lower levels of the dermis (where the collagen is produced) and help regenerate the new skin cells. Collagen and elastin production in the skin is escalated and this helps in the reduction of skin imperfections which makes the skin appear younger looking, smoother, healthier and brighter.

You will notice a fresher skin within 6 weeks, and your skin will continue to improve over 6 – 12mths.

Results of Dermapen are very natural indeed. The treatment works in harmony with the body’s own processes, stimulating healing, repair and cell renewal. The results is that the skin refreshes itself, so there is no danger of looking ‘overdone’ or fake at all.

Are there any side effects ?

It is common for your skin to feel a little sore and tight initially after the treatment. It will also appear as if it is slightly sunburnt, but this and the soreness and tightness will subside in a few days. For this reason it is best to plan your treatment well in advance of important events or social occasions.

How long does it take to have an effect ?

Following treatment, it can take up to 6 weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a natural and long lasting enhancement. In most cases, the recommendation is for a series of three procedures with approximately 6 weeks between them, but this will vary depending on what condition is being treated.

After the treatment, your body will start to naturally regenerate and repair the skin, working below the surface in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen and elastin is formed, new skin cells are generated and blood supply is enhanced.

Treatment is normally carried out as a course of treatment – generally from 3 sessions but your practitioner will advise you for best results. In the treatment of acne scars and other types of scarring it may be necessary for your treatment to extend to five procedures.

Are there any things I need to know to prepare myself for having Microneedling ?

This will be discussed with you at your pre-treatment consultation in depth.

Things we need you to be aware of are:

    • Avoiding consuming alcohol at least 24 hours before.
    • Avoiding blood thinning medication or anti-inflammatories a few days leading up to treatment (these can increase the possibility of bruising).
    • Avoid any hair removal a few days before treatment (shaving, waxing, threading) in the area/s you wish treating.
    • Avoid using products with anti-ageing ingredients (retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic acid) a week leading up to treatment.

What can I expect after a Microneedling Tretament ?

    • The skin will appear red / flushed for 1 – 2 days after treatment. This shows that it is responding to the treatment and shows the start of the healing / renewal process.
    • Wear a high factor mineral-based sun protection to protect your skin. This is advisable year-round to prevent ageing, but essential for 2 – 4 weeks after treatment while the skin is healing.
    • Avoid any active/stimulating skin preparations for a couple of days (i.e. AHA’s, retinol (vitamin A) or anything acidic).
    • A good and suitable daily skincare regime is crucial to help promote and achieve optimum results.
