Microsclerotherapy
What is Microsclerotherapy ?
Microsclerotherapy is a well established injection method of treating thread veins.
Fed up and embarrassed by unsightly veins on the leg ?
Microsclerotherapy is a well-established injection technique used to treat spider, or thread veins of the legs and involves injecting a liquid into the veins that causes them to disappear over time.
Microsclerotherapy is a highly effective and safe cosmetic procedure that’s been utilised for over 80 years and is the “Gold Standard” treatment for the removal of spider thread veins on the legs.
How does Microsclerotherapy Work ?
Small needles are used to inject a solution known as sclerosing agent directly into the spider veins.
The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing the two opposing sides to seal together and disappear.
What are the Benefits of Microsclerotherapy ?
- One of the best minimally invasive options for removing thread veins from the legs.
- The treatment does not leave any scars.
- The treatment is more effective on leg veins than IPL treatments.
- The treatment is virtually painless.
What results can I expect ?
It is not always possible to achieve 100% clearance but we aim for at least 60 – 80% improvement in their appearance.
The results are not immediate. The veins look worse before they look better and the treatment may need to be repeated at 4-12 week intervals.
Most clients are satisfied with the results somewhere between two and four treatments.
Are the results permanent ?
The veins that are successfully treated will not re-occur but we can’t stop new ones from developing which could happen over time after the treatment.
Is the procedure painful ?
The procedure is not painful; tiny needles are used and the majority of clients claim that the procedure is much less than painful than they anticipated.
There is a little sting associated with each injection which lasts just a few seconds.
Most individuals tolerate the procedure and do not require any type of anaesthesia.
Is it a safe procedure ?
Yes. The procedure has been performed on millions of people, over many years and its safety is well established.
Who is a good candidate for Microsclerotherapy ?
Those who benefit most from Sclerotherapy have spider veins or small varicose veins in their legs, are between the ages of 30-60, have not had blood clotting issues in the past, and have not given birth or been pregnant in the past 3 months.
Also, those who closely follow the pre and post treatment instructions will see optimal results.
As part of our free consultation we can inform you if we think the procedure will not be suitable, or whether you need to consult a vascular surgeon before going ahead with treatment.
How many treatments will be needed ?
This depends upon the severity and spread of the veins – we can give you a better idea once we have examined your legs.
It varies from individual to individual but typically 2 – 4 treatments are required for the best results. In patients with a few veins, 1 – 2 sessions will suffice. More treatments are required where veins are more numerous and extensive.
Usually two to four treatments gives the best results, but some people may need more or less.
We recommend you budget for up to four treatments over a period of 4 – 12 months.
Are there any side effects ?
Immediately after treatment you may have some itching and discomfort in the treated areas which can last for a week or two. The veins will look worse initially for the first few weeks – this is normal.
Occasionally the treatment can cause a mild brownish discolouration in the treated area – this settles slowly over a period of months, and even when present the appearance is usually much better than before treatment.
There is a very small risk of deep vein thrombosis after treatment but this is exceptionally rare.
How long does it last ?
Treated veins rarely re-appear, however, it should be expected that new thread veins will appear over time anyway, irrespective of treatment.
How long does treatment take ?
This depends on what area is being treated, but usually treatment takes between 30 minutes and an hour.
How much is Microsclerotherapy treatment ?
Please see our CURRENT PRICE LIST for treatment costs.
How long do I leave between treatments ?
Veins initially appear worse after treatment, and then slowly start to improve.
We recommend further treatments at least 2 months after the last one as the results usually become most apparent between 8 and 12 weeks.
Are there any side effects ?
Microsclerotherapy leads to few side effects other than a little discomfort and some bruising. Severe allergic reactions are rare.
A few people may develop intense itching at the site of injection.
What is the Aftercare following Microsclerotherapy treatment ?
Immediately after the treatment graduated compression stockings will be applied. You will be advised to wear these continuously day and night for up to 14 days. The compression supports the healing process and will help to prevent any post-treatments complications.
There is no down-time as such and you can immediately drive or return to work.
The healing vessels may take up to 6 – 8 weeks to fully fade. During that time you must avoid UV exposure.
